马修的父亲是美国华尔街一家基金管理公司的经理，早在中国改革开放初期，这位睿智的企业家就将开拓市场的目光投向了中国。由于父亲与中国金融街频繁的业务往来，马修三岁时就到过上海，九岁时来过北京，逐渐对这个东方大国产生了兴趣。
Matthew’s father is the manager of a fund management company on Wall Street in the United States. In the early days of China’s reform and opening up, the wise entrepreneur just decided to explore the market in China. Matthew visited Shanghai and Beijing when he was very young because of his father’s frequent dealings with China’s financial street. So, he gradually became interested in this oriental country.
1995年，11岁的马修又只身来华，成为北京史家胡同小学五年级的学生。最初，东西方文化的差异曾使马修感到陌生，也时遇尴尬，但很快他就融入了充满友爱和亲情的新集体。老师和同学们在学习上给予的真诚帮助，伯伯、阿姨生活上对他的细心照料，让这个来自异国的孩子没有丝毫的寂寞和孤独。在感受中国人的淳朴与友善、真挚与热情的同时，爱的种子也深深播撒在马修幼小的心田。
In 1995, when Matthew was 11 years old, he came to China alone and became a fifth-grade student in Beijing Shijia Hutong Primary School. At first, the cultural differences between the east and the west once made him feel strange and embarrassed, but he quickly integrated into the community which full of love and affection. The sincere help given by teachers and classmates in the study and the scrupulous care given by the uncle and aunt in the life have let the foreign child no longer feel lonely. While feeling the simplicity, friendliness, sincerity and enthusiasm of the Chinese people, the seed of love is also deeply sown in Matthew’s young heart.
一年后，马修要回美国了，在史家胡同小学全体师生为他举行的盛大欢送会上，马修深情地用中文演讲：“回到美国后，如果有人问我最喜欢中国什么？我会一千遍一万遍地告诉他们，我最喜欢中国人。我这一生都会为美中之间的友谊而奋斗不息。”五年后，少年马修以真诚的行动开始实践他的诺言。
A year later, Matthew needed to return to the United States. At the big farewell party held for him by all the teachers and students, he spoke affectionately in Chinese, ＂after coming back to the United States, if someone asks me what I like most about China? I will tell them over and over again that I like Chinese most. I will fight for the friendship between the United States and China all my life. " Five years later, young Matthew began to live up to his promise with sincere actions.
